Artificial Weathering of Polymers


The artificial weathering of polymers is a combination of artificial radiation and the exposure of water in the form of spraying and/or condensation.

For an artificial weathering of samples or construction elements the equipment with UV fluorescent lamp (QUV/spray) as well as Xenon arc lamp (Xe-3-HDS, Xe-2-HS) are available.  


Xenon Arc Weathering

For an artificial weathering with xenon arc lamp rotating trommel testing machines as well as flatbed testing machines are available. There is a distinction accordingly to the arrangement in the test chamber. In the rotating trommel testing machine the xenon arc lamp is perpendicular arranged whereby the specimen mounts turn around the lamp. The flatbed testing machine is characterised by a flat sample chamber. The exposure area has the dimensions 45 cm x 72 cm. Therewith samples, plates as well as three-dimensional construction elements can be investigated. The radiation is provided by three xenon arc lamps, which are fixed in the ceiling of the chamber. A special feature of the flatbed testing machine Q-Sun Xe-3-HDS that is used in our laboratories, is the possibility of realising a spraying with another medium than water for example with different pH values.

The radiation characteristics at xenon arc lamps is adapted by using appropriate filters. According to DIN EN ISO 4892-2, two methods are distinguished: method A for testing with filters for artificial weathering (global radiation) and method B for testing with filters for artificial weathering behind the window glass.


UV-Weathering

For the realisation of the artificial weathering respectively radiation with ultraviolet fluorescent lamp according to DIN EN ISO 4892-3 different lamps are used, which have a different radiation pattern. The method A describes the weathering with UVA-340-lamps (Typ 1A) and the method B the global radiation behind window glass with UVA-351-lamps (Typ 1B). These two lamps show a very good accordance with the radiation patter of sun light.

In contrast, UVB-313-lamps emit also in the range of the middle and farther UV-region and therewith under the solar cut-off-wavelength of 295 nm. These lamps are used primarily for investigations in aerospace.
