Density Measurement

The density ρ of a homogeneous solid is defined as the ratio of its mass to its volume. If the mass of a material is related to the volume of its solid part, the ratio is called real density. If the mass is related to the volume of the entire quantity of the substances, that is including pores and voids, the ratio is called raw density.

Sample Preparation

  • Sample extraction of construction elements, specimens or plates
  • Deflashing of the samples

Testing Conditions

  • Immersion method (Method A)
  • Testing at room temperature
  • Immersion liquid: ethanol or distilled water, depending on material

Accredited Standards

  • DIN EN ISO 1183-1:
Plastics – Methods for determining the density of non-cellular plastics
    • Part 1: Immersion method, liquid pyknometer method and titration method

Other Standards

  • DIN EN ISO 845:
Cellular plastics and rubbers – Determination of apparent density
